Babe: The Gallant Pig
(Ages 6-12)
Babe: The Gallant Pig is all about the importance of treating everyone politely. Dick King Smith doesn't sledgehammer the message but makes it a key to the plot. The porcine Babe triumphs because he talks nicely to the sheep he's trying to herd. Even his adoptive mother, a border collie, finds at one point she needs to stop barking and treat the sheep as equals, though she'll never really believe they are. If you're reading aloud, you'll find it tempting but impossible to render the verbiage of the farmer's wife as well as the movie's actress does. Basic line illustration by Mary Rayner. )
