The Dadmag Guide To Children's Books

Bimwili and the Zimwi:
A Tale From Zanzibar
(Ages 4-8)

Central to Verna Aardema's story of Bimwili and the Zimwi: A Tale from Zanzibar is a simple song that the little girl Bimwili sings about a shell she found in the ocean. It's a song kids may remember happily for a decade. Imprisoned inside a drum by the Grinch-like Zimwi, a blend of beggar and magician, Bimwili sings another song to free herself. This may be a little too scary for the youngest at bedtime, but most children focus on the girl's triumph, which she shares with her father. The lyrical illustrations by Susan Meddaugh are like looking in a conch shell.
