The Dadmag Guide To Children's Books

Captain Underpants
(Ages 6-12)

A kind of Rocky and Bullwinkle meet Chicken Man, Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants series appeals to kids with its fourth grade anti-heroes, George and Harold, who are scathingly satirical comic book artists perennially in trouble at school. Fortunately, they've hypnotized their principal so he turns into the eponymous brief-clad superhero whenever he hears fingers snap. Besides the trials of school discipline in these books, someone or something is always plotting to take over the world. Each volume contains sections purporting to be examples of George and Harold's comic book creations and flip book pages that display the inevitably violent crisis and simultaneously ridicule any squeamishness about it. Mom may not like the various toilet references, but these funny-to-kids, speedily paced chapter books give you a leg up in reintroducing reading to a Pokemon or Nintendo addict.
