The Dadmag Guide To Children's Books

Curious George
(Ages 2-8)

Who wouldn't want to be a monkey if they could do what H.A. Rey's Curious George does? He jumps off a ship into the ocean and survives, escapes from prison, walks on telephone wires, and is borne aloft by a bunch of balloons. He may be taken from Africa by his captor/friend, the man in the yellow hat, but he still has his curiosity to cheer him. Primarily a risk-taker and optimist, George obviously can't stay in the zoo where he lands at the end of the first book. Some of his subsequent adventures lack the panache of the original but they all fascinate George's younger fans, who are used to mishaps of their own. Kids like the fact that George, despite his many mishaps, comes up smiling.
