The Dadmag Guide To Children's Books

 |
Golem
(Ages 9-12)
Some kids are ready for tougher stuff. In David Wisniewski's Golem, when the Christians persecute the Jews of medieval Prague, the head Rabbi uses his powers to call forth the title character, a giant made from clay. The good news is that Golem intimidates the intolerant; the bad news is he must die as part of a peace settlement. Poignantly, he has learned to love life while doing his work. But hey, nobody said peace was gonna be easy. Besides getting a taste of the pain of compromise, kids will be impressed by the illustrations, made from maniacally intricate scissorwork on paper.
