The Dadmag Guide To Children's Books

Harry (series)
(Ages 4-8)

For kids who are still just beginning to read on their own, check out a Harry series that predates that English guy. You may have trouble finding them in bookstores but libraries have them. This Harry, created by Barbara Ann Porte, has simple adventures that real kids have: he has to be in a wedding, he loses his library card, he gets a dog. Even though the language and format of these books is reminiscent of school readers, Harry is three-dimensional: his Mom we learn has died, and his Dad is allergic to pets. Even better, Harry is as sensitive to the feelings of the adults in the stories as they are to his. Cartoonish but pleasant illustrations by Yossi Abolafia.
