Joseph Had a Little Overcoat
(Ages 2-8)
Simms Taback chose a less well-known song to make into a book but his Joseph Had a Little Overcoat is as inventive in its own way as Zelinsky's Wheels on the Bus. It may also remind you of Eric Carle's best work, like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Draw Me a Star. The rustic Joseph, a master of reuse, converts his worn-out overcoat into a jacket, then into a vest, a scarf, and so on, down to a button. Taback illustrates all this in vibrating patterns and colors as well as collage. The message, that you can make something out of nothing, is both a credo for artists and a mantra for recyclers.
