Knight's Castle
(Ages 9-12)
Kids waiting for the next Harry Potter may enjoy Knight's Castle, by Edward Eager, especially if they know something about Robin Hood, Ivanhoe, and/or King Arthur. The conceit is that one of Roger's lead soldiers has the power to transport him, his sister, and their two cousins to and from a chivalric free-for-all in a landscape that corresponds more or less exactly to the one they've built in the cousins' playroom. When they change things in the playroom, things also change in the magical world. The relationship between child's play and reality is at issue in another way: Roger's eventual quest may make a difference in his father's illness. Useful illustrations by N.M. Bodecker.
