Lottie's Princess Dress
(Ages 4-8)
Lottie in Lottie's Princess Dress, by Doris Dorrie, has her own ideas about what time to get up and what dress is appropriate for school on this particular day. Her working Mom has other ideas. The crisis comes when Mom, illustrated Paul Klee-style by Julia Kaergel, throws a fire-breathing fit. The total parental capitulation that follows will strike a chord in many households. The undeterred Lottie not only goes to school wearing her princess dress, she cajoles her Mom into wearing an evening dress to the office. Not to worry: the lesson is that these things don't have to be such a big deal and there's something to be learned from following the child. Those illustrations, all lines and angles, are made even fresher by swatches of gold color that somehow feel like gold to the touch.
