The Dadmag Guide To Children's Books

Monk Camps Out
(Ages 4-8)

Does your kid think sleeping out in the yard is a good idea? Emily Arnold McCully's Monk Camps Out is excellent preparation or de-briefing for the experience, for both you and your child. This kid, Monk, a mouse, gets through most of the night okay, with a little help from his folks. True, he ends up finishing the night in his parents' chair while they sleep outside next to the tent, thinking he's in there. That's only because he woke up, couldn't find his baseball mitt, and came in to find it while the parents were going out a different door to check on him. The mix-up may be far-fetched but the bottom line is completely realistic: everyone is thoroughly exhausted the next day. The details in McCully's illustrations appeal to observant kids.
