The Dadmag Guide To Children's Books

 |
Outside Over There
(Ages 2-8)
Maurice Sendak's Ida, in Outside Over There, steps into a strange dreamworld. Unlike Lewis Carrol's rather blasé Alice, Ida has a purpose more serious than seeing a garden. She's got to recover her baby sister, taken in the night by goblins. In this poem-like story about a child who must be an adult, Ida successfully covers for her sojourning father. Children revel in the main character's strength and in Sendak's curious period drawings.
