Stuart Little

Some special requests for reading from kids induce ennui, others a mild euphoria. A request for a chapter of anything by E.B. White is the equivalent of a holiday. The recent film version turned Stuart Little into a kid brought home from the orphanage, but White had no problem with Mrs. Little giving birth to a mouse-like son. The original Stuart, the epitome of suave, was looking for something more than joining a family. What the author found in following Stuart's quest is poetry. Whether they've seen the movie or not, kids eat up the real thing, including the drawings by Garth Williams.
