The Dadmag Guide To Children's Books

The Lorax
(Ages 4-up)

One warning for Dr. Seuss lovers: Don't buy the recently released Gerald McBoing Boing on the fly. Made from an animated cartoon that Seuss worked on fifty years ago, the gist of the story may strike you as shallow, or else extremely ironic. A better bet would be The Lorax, Seuss's vigorous, humorous tale that introduces kids to environmentalism. It has a wonderful gothic touch in the character of the strange, isolated Once-ler, the capitalist doomed by his own greed, who nonetheless learned this lesson: If kids don't work to save the planet, it ain't gonna happen.
