The Dadmag Guide To Children's Books

The Yellow Star
(Ages 9-12)

You wish the story of The Yellow Star was true and not just a very moving legend, but it turns out that Danish King Christian X did not in fact have the yellow star sewn onto his jacket as a signal that all Danes should wear the Nazi-ordered insignia. Still, author Carmen Agra Deedy tells us in a note that stories of the king's threat to do so circulated in Europe, that no Jews were forced to wear the yellow star within Denmark, and that Danes did work to help Jews escape. The book appeals to our better instincts while conceding that history can be more complex than legend. Illustrated Winslow Homer-style, by Henri Sorensen.
