The Dadmag Guide To Children's Books

William Shakespeare
and the Globe
(Ages 4 and up)

Many kids know Shakespeare's name even if they've never seen a play or read a child's version. William Shakespeare and the Globe provides a further introduction through a simple, pleasant presentation of the known facts about Will's life, background information about the London he worked in, and a thorough history of the building of Elizabethan theaters. The latter may sound a bit dry, but through well-chosen, intriguing details and carefully drawn trading-card size illustrations, several to a page, Aliki Brandenberg makes it all very easy to take in. In addition, for the kid who wants to know what this has to do with the present day, the book includes a section on the actor and director Sam Wannamaker and his dream-turned-reality of building a detailed replica of the Globe, which opened in London in 1998. There's also a handy chronology of events related to Shakespeare's life and a list of words and phrases he introduced into everyday speech.
